Description of electoral system:
- National Assembly members are directly elected to 5-year terms in a single national constituency and in multi-seat constituencies by a proportional representation vote. The leader of the winning party becomes President.
Last Election:
- The last elections for the National Assembly (Assembleia Nacional) occurred on August 31, 2012. The MPLA party won 175 seats and its leader, incumbent President Jose Eduardo DOS SANTOS retained the presidency. After 38 years in power, DOS SANTOS will not be running for reelection and has selected Defense Minister Joao LOURENCO to succeed him. It is expected that DOS SANTOS will remain leader of the party until 2018.
