General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 147 seats in the National Assembly of Guinea 

 

Government Structure: 

  • Assembly: Legislative responsibilities are currently handled by the Transitional National Council (Conseil national de transition), an appointed unicameral, 81-seat body. Following this election, Guinea will have a bicameral Parliament (Parlement) with an 87 seat Senate (Sénat) and 147 seat National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) 

 

Electoral System:  

  • The President is typically directly elected through a two-round majoritarian system to a once renewable 7-year term.   

  • Two-thirds of the 87 members of the Senate are indirectly elected, and the remaining one-third are selected by the President. All members serve 6-year terms. 

  • Two-thirds of the 147 members of the National Assembly are elected through majority vote in single-member constituencies. The remaining one-third of members are elected through proportional representation from a national list. All members are elected to a 5-year term.
