At Stake in this Election:  

Slovenia is voting on 4 non-binding referendum questions: whether to legalize assisted suicide, adopt preferential voting in elections for the national assembly, whether medical cannabis should be legalized, and if recreational cannabis should be legalized. 

This election is being held concurrently with EU Parliament elections. 

Government Structure: 

• Chief of State: President Natasa PIRC MUSAR (since 23 December 2022) 

• Head of Government: Prime Minister Robert GOLOB (since 1 June 2022) 

• Assembly: bicameral Parliament with 40 seat National Council (Drzavni Svet) and 90 seat National Assembly (Drzavni Zbor) 

Electoral System:  

• The President is directly elected by majority vote in up to 2 rounds to a 5-year term, once renewable. 

• The Prime Minister is nominated by the President and approved by the National Assembly. 

• Members of the National Council are indirectly elected by the electoral college to 5-year terms. 

• 88 of 90 members of the National Assembly are directly elected in single-seat constituencies by proportional representation. The remaining 2 members are elected by plurality vote in special constituencies to represent Italian and Hungarian minorities. All members serve 4-year terms. 

Last Election:  

In the last referendum in 2021, voters overwhelmingly rejected enacting the Act Amending the Water Act, with 87% against. Voter turnout was 46%.
