Election for New Zealand House of Representatives

Results

General Information

  • All 120 seats of the New Zealand House of Representatives

  • Chief of State: King CHARLES III (since 8 September 2022)

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Christopher LUXON (since 25 January 2023)

  • Assembly: unicameral Parliament (Pāremata Aotearoa) with 120 seats

  • The King is a hereditary monarch.

  • The Governor-General is the monarch’s representative in New Zealand. The official holding this position is nominated by the Prime Minister and is appointed by the monarch.

  • The parliamentary majority leader is appointed Prime Minister by the Governor-General.

  • There are 120* members in Parliament. 72 members are directly elected by plurality vote from 65 general constituencies and 7 Māori constituencies. Each set of constituencies covers the entire country, and Māori voters may choose to vote in either their local Māori or general constituency. An additional 48 members are directly elected by closed party-list proportional representation vote. All members serve 3-year terms.

*If a party wins more electorate votes than seats that it is entitled to under the party list vote, an “overhang” seat is awarded to maintain proportional representation in parliament. In this scenario,  the party winning the overhang seat(s) keeps that many seats in addition to the 120 seats distributed proportionally. In the 2023 general election, for example, a total of 122 members of parliament were elected due to this provision, including the 120 statutory members, and 2 overhang seats.

In 2023, the National Party won the most seats with 48 seats, followed by the Labour Party (34), the Green Party (15), the ACT New Zealand (11), New Zealand First (8), and Te Pāti Māori (6). Voter turnout was 77.51%.
