General Information
-
All 120 seats in the Israeli parliament (Knesset).
Government Structure:
-
Chief of State: President Isaac HERZOG (since 07 July 2021)
-
Head of Government: Prime Minister Benjamin NETANYAHU (since 29 December 2022)
-
Assembly: unicameral parliament with a 120-seat Knesset
-
The President of Israel is elected by an absolute majority in the Knesset, by secret ballot. If no candidate receives an absolute majority of votes in the first or second round of voting, the candidate with the least votes is eliminated in each subsequent round, if needed until only two remain. They are elected to a single seven-year term.
-
The Prime Minister must be a Member of parliament and is generally the leader of the largest party in the Knesset. Following consultations with parties in the Knesset, the President assigns a Member with the task of building a Government. The Government is presented to and confirmed by the Knesset. Finally, the Prime Minister of the approved Government makes a declaration of allegiance before the Knesset.
In the 2022 Israeli parliamentary elections were held on November 1, 2022. Voter turnout was 70.61%. The Likud party won 32 seats, the Yesh Atid party won 24 seats, the Religious Zionist Party won 14 seats, the National Unity party won 12 seats, and the Shas party won 11 seats. The remaining 27 seats were won by independent candidates and smaller parties.
No party won an absolute majority of seats, and a coalition was therefore negotiated between the Likud, Otzma Yehudit, Noam, Religious Zionist Party, United Torah Judaism, and Shas parties.
The 2026 Israeli parliamentary elections mark the first successfully completed four-year term for the Knesset since 1988.
