General Information

At Stake in this Election:  

  • All 100 seats in the Latvian Parliament. 

 

Government Structure: 

  • Assembly: Unicameral Parliament (Saeima) with 100 members 

 

Electoral System:  

  • The President is elected by the parliament through a majority vote. The President can serve up to two consecutive 4-year terms.  

  • The Prime Minister is nominated by the President and voted on by members of the Saeima through a vote of confidence. 

  • The 100 members of the Saeima are directly elected through proportional representation. For a political party to be elected, it must received more than 5 percent of the total number of votes cast in all constituencies. Members serve 4-year terms.   

 

Last Election: 

In the last elections, New Unity (Vienotība) won 26 seats (26%), Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) won 16 seats (16%), United List (AS) won 15 seats (15%), National Alliance (Nacionālā Apvienība) won 13 seats (13%), For Stability! (S!) won 11 seats (11%), The Progressives (PRO) won 10 seats (10%), and Latvia First Party won 9 seats (9%). The voter turnout was 59% with 916,691 cast votes.
