Electoral System:

The president is elected by majority vote in up to two rounds. Successful candidates serve a five-year term and cannot serve more than two terms consecutively.

The Prime Minister is appointed by the President upon consultation with the parties represented in the National Assembly. The Prime Minister is generally the leader of the party or coalition holding a majority of seats in parliament.

All 55 members of the National Assembly are directly elected via a proportional list system. Votes are allotted using the D’Hondt Method
The last National Assembly elections were held in September 2022. Independent Democratic Action (IDA) won 30 seats, followed by the Socialist Democratic Party (MLSTP) with 18 seats. Voter turnout was 66%.
New/Unique in this Election:
In February 2026, Parliament approved a law to transition the country to a system of automatic voter registration. The ‘Automatic National Electoral Registration’ was used for the first time in the July presidential races, making this race the second ever test of the new system.
