The President is the head of state, directly elected for a six-year period. Individuals can serve up to two terms.

The Prime Minister, or Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, is appointed by the President with the parliament’s approval.

The upper chamber, the Federation Council, is not directly elected. Each of the 85 federal subjects of Russia appoints two delegates to the Federal Council, for a total of 170 members. Members serve 4-year terms.

The 450 members of the lower house, the State Duma, are elected for a term of five years, with parallel voting. Half of the seats (225) are elected by closed party-list proportional representation within a single nationwide constituency, and the other half elected in 225 single-member constituencies by first-past-the-post voting. Members serve 5-year terms.

In the last elections, the United Russia party won 324 seats (49.82%), the Communist Party of the Russian Federation won 57 seats (18.93%), A Just Russia party won 27 seats (7.46%), the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia won 21 seats (7.55$), and the New People party won 13 seats (5.32%). The Rodina party, the Party of Growth, and the Civic Platform party each won 1 seat. The voter turnout was 52%, with over 56,329,690 cast votes.
