The King is a hereditary monarch.

The Prime Minister is nominated by the Speaker and elected by simple majority of the Riksdag.

The 349 members of the Riksdag are elected through open list proportional representation system. They serve four-year terms. 310 of the seats are allotted to permanent constituencies. The additional 39 seats are allotted based on population, to support proportional representation.
In the last election in 2022, the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterna) won a plurality of 107 seats, which was insufficient to form a majority in parliament. The Moderate Party, which won 68 seats, formed a coalition with the Christian Democrats and the Liberal Party, for a total of 103 seats. With the backing of the Sweden Democrats (73 seats), outlined in the Tidö Agreement, a majority bloc of 176 seats was formed, and elected Ulf Kristersson to serve as prime minister in October 2022. Voter turnout was 84 percent.
