On 23 August 2025, Taiwan will hold a referendum on whether a nuclear power plant should continue operating. The referendum asks:  

• Do you agree that the Third Nuclear Power Plant should continue operating, provided that the competent authority confirms there are no safety concerns? 

Government Structure: 

• Chief of State: President LAI Ching-te (since 20 May 2024)  

• Head of Government: Premier CHO Jung-tai (since 20 May 2024)  

• Assembly: unicameral, 113-seat Legislative Yuan 

Electoral System: 

• The President and Vice President are directly elected by simple majority popular vote to serve a 4 year term, renewable once. 

• Members of the Legislative Yuan are directly elected by plurality system to serve 3 year terms, with no term limits prescribed by the Constitution. Each county in Taiwan elects a member, with provisions for additional seats based on population. Seats are also reserved for members representing Mongolia, Tibet, frontier-region ethnic groups, Chinese citizens abroad, occupational groups, and women’s organizations. The specific number of these seats are determined by law.

Taiwan last held a referendum on November 26, 2022, which failed due to insufficient votes.
