At Stake in this Election 

  • All 338 seats in Canadian Parliament  

  • Chief of State: King CHARLES III (since 8 September 2022), represented by Governor General Mary SIMON (since 26 July 2021)  

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Mark CARNEY (since 14 March 2025) 

  • Assembly: bicameral Parliament of Canada (Parliament du Canada) comprised of the 338-seat House of Commons and the 105-seat Senate.  

  • The monarchy is hereditary. The Governor General is appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister for a 5-year term.  

  • The Governor General designates the Prime Minister, who is generally the leader of the majority party or coalition.  

  • All 338 members of the House of Commons are directly elected by plurality/majority vote. Seats are redistristributed after each decennial census on the basis of population between the 10 states and 3 provinces, which may also change the overall number of seats. Members serve 5-year terms.  

  • All 105 members of the Senate are appointed by the Governor General on behalf of the Monarch. Seats are equally allocated between the following four divisions: Ontario, Quebec, the Maritime Provinces/Nova Scotia and New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island, and the Western Provinces of Manitoba/British Columbia/Saskatchewan/Alberta. Members of the Senate serve for life, with a mandatory retirement age of 75

The last parliamentary election was held on September 20, 2021. The Liberal Party won 160 seats, the Conservative Party won 119 seats, Bloc Québécois won 32 seats, the New Democratic Party won 25 seats, and the Green Party of Canada won 2 seats. Voter turnout was 63%.
