The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor-General and is usually the leader of the majority party or coalition. The Prime Minister recommends the Deputy Prime Minister to the Governor-General, who ultimately appoints the position.

31 members of the House of Representatives are directly elected by plurality . The House of Representatives can elect a Speaker from outside the House, thus adding a 32nd member. All members serve 5-year terms, and there are no term limits.

Members of the Senate are appointed by the Governor-General on the advice of the Prime Minister (6 seats), the leader of the opposition (3 seats), the Council of Churches and Evangelical Association of Churches (1 seat), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Belize Business Bureau (1 seat), or the National Trade Union Congress and the Civil Society Steering Committee (1 seat). Senate terms begin upon appointment and end at the next dissolution of the National Assembly, lasting approximately five years. There are no term limits.
The last election for the House of Representatives was held on 11 November 2020. The People’s United Party won 59.6% of the vote (26 seats) and the United Democratic Party won 38.8% of the vote (5 seats). The voter turnout was 82%.
