Electoral System:

The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds and may serve up to two terms of seven years.

The Prime Minister is nominated by the President and confirmed by Parliament.

In the National Assembly, 100 members are directly elected by proportional representation vote and an additional 23 members are appointed to achieve a gender quotas (at least 30% women) and ethnic quotas (3 Twa members and a 60:40 Hutu-Tutsi ratio). Members serve five-year terms, and there are no term limits. 
- 
In the Senate, 36 members are indirectly elected by members of communal councils with each council electing two senators of different ethnic groups. An additional 3 Twa members are appointed. All 39 members serve five-year terms, and there are no term limits. 
In 2020, the CNDD-FDD won a majority with 86 seats, followed by the CNL (32 seats) and UPRONA (2 seats). Voter turnout was 86%.
