General Information

At Stake in this Election: 

  • All 250 seats in the Mozambican Assembly of the Republic 

The presidential election will be held concurrently.

  • Chief of State: President Jacinto NYUSI (since 15 January 2015) 

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Adriano MALEIANE (since 3 March 2022) 

  • Assembly: unicameral Assembly of the Republic (Assembleia da República) with 250 seats 

  • The President is directly elected by absolute majority vote in up to two rounds and may serve up to two consecutive 5-year terms. 

  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. 

  • In the Assembly of the Republic, 248 members are elected by party-list proportional representation vote, and 2 members (representing the diaspora) are directly elected by plurality vote. All 250 members serve 5-year terms. 

In the 2019 legislative election, FRELIMO won a majority of the vote, followed by RENAMO and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique. Voter turnout was 51%.
