Description of electoral system:
- The president of Moldova is directly elected, in two rounds if needed, for a 4-year term with eligibility for a second term.
Last Election:
- The last presidential election was held on 16 March 2012. Independent candidate Nicolae TIMOFTI was elected president by members of parliament with 61.4% of the vote.
Note: The presidential election in 2016 will be the first direct election for the president of Moldova since 1996. The Constitutional Court ruled that a revision to the constitution allowing members of parliament to elect the president was unconstitutional.
