Description of government structure:
- Chief of State: President Gurbanguly BERDYMUKHAMEDOV (since December 2006)

- Assembly: Turkmenistan has a unicameral National Assembly (Mejlis) with 125 seats.
Description of electoral system:
- The President is elected by absolute majority vote through a two-round system to serve a 7-year term. The term limit was extended from 5 years to 7 years in 2016. A single candidate must receive greater than 50% of the vote to be elected. If no candidates receive over 50% a runoff will be held between the two candidates who received the most votes in the first round.
- In the National Assembly (Mejlis) 125 members are elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies to serve 5-year terms
Last Election:
- In 2012 Gurbanguly BERDYMUKHAMEDOV was re-elected as president with 89.18% of the vote. He faced no opposition from an opposing party, running against three Democratic candidates.
