Description of government structure:
- Chief of State: President Serzh SARGSIAN (since 9 April 2008)
- Head of Government: Prime Minister Karen KARAPETYAN (since 13 September 2016)
- Assembly: Armenia has a unicameral National Assembly (Azgayin Zhoghov) with 101 seats.[1]
Description of electoral system:
- A referendum passed in 2015 changed the electoral system from a mixed system to a proportional representation system with a "stable parliamentary majority" stipulation.
- The 101 seats are awarded proportionally to political parties.
- There will be a second round of voting if no party or alliance achieves a "stable parliamentary majority" of 54% in the first round. Coalition talks are held after the first round if the 54% is not reached and coalitions of up to two parties may be formed. If 28 days after the fist round election day a stable parliamentary majority is not reached by any coalition a second round of voting will be held between the two parties which received the most votes.
- Political parties must surpass a 5% threshold and alliances a 7% threshold to win seats.
Last Election:
- The coalition of the Republican Party of Armenia and Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law Party) won 112 of 131 contested seats. The largest opposition party, the Armenian National Congress, won 7 seats while the remaining 12 seats were split among three additional parties.

[1] A referendum passed in 2015 reduced the parliament from 131 seats, of which 90 were awarded proportionately, to 101 seats.
